Ryf and Steger Reign Supreme at Austrian National Champs

August 30

Daniela Ryf, four-time Ironman World Champion, has won the final race of the Spirit Tri Series, the Austrian National Championship, Transvorarlberg Triathlon

Following an electric display in Alpe D'Huez, Ryf continued to show her mountain climbing skills as she won the overall title in 4:01:47, some 17 minutes ahead of her nearest competitor, South African Annah Watkinson representing Triangle Sports who ran into the runner's up position with a blistering run. Rising Swiss star Nina Derron from the Home of Triathlon in St Moritz rounded out the podium with a solid all round swim, bike, run display. Ryf's victory was set up over a 93km cycle leg that had 2000m of elevation difference from Bregenz to the the Hochtannberg Pass en route to Lech.

In the men's event a stacked field saw Austrian Thomas Steger take out his fourth Transvorarlberg title and the Austrian National Championship ahead of international stars Matt Trautman from South Africa and Ruedi Wild from Switzerland. A great exhibition of Alpine riding saw Steger break away on the second half of the bike and extend the winning margin on the run.

The Championship event attracted more than 600 competitors who were rewarded with picturesque weather and scenery through the whole day. One of the toughest races on the circuit the Austrian event is a 'bucket list' race for athletes keen to test their mental and physical fitness.
